Federal Partners in Transition eDiscussion til May 27

Have you ever thought that there was a better way to do things?  Have you ever wished you could talk to somebody important enough to act on your ideas?  Or maybe just listen to your ideas?  Here’s your chance.  There is an online discussion taking place the next two weeks (May 13-27).  Representatives of the Department of Labor, Education, Health and Human Services and the Social Security Administration (Federal Partners in Transition)   are hosting this discussion and asking the following question:

What legislative and regulatory changes need to happen to effectively implement employment, education, health and human and social security services for youth and young adults with disabilities under public law?

It is a “crowd-sourced” discussion.  Individuals and agencies present their ideas and the rest of us vote their ideas up and down.  In this way, the “cream” of ideas rise to the top.  There were over 100 ideas within 24 hours, and the top idea (with 54 votes) was to eliminate waiting lists.  (Nemo votes for that!)

Participants need to register in order to participate.  In order to participate go to:  http://fptepolicyworks.ideascale.com/  In addition, we asked one author a question about their particular idea, and have received half a dozen responses from participants so far.  So Nemo won’t be asking a lot of idle questions…LOL.

Nemo has noted that some ideas on the website are poorly written and difficult to understand.  Some are pure jargon.  A participant might want to draft an idea and have someone else read it before posting.  Otherwise your great idea could be lost in the mix if it is unclear.   And we don’t want that to happen!

Talk About Curing Autism has arranged a full afternoon of learning for those attending their Autism Learning Seminar on Saturday April 20, 2013.  The session is from 1-5pm at Home State Bank in Crystal Lake.  It is free, but an RSVP is required.   Three speakers will be featured:  Micki Moran, JD, Michelle Burr, and Dr. Greg Brown.

Micki Moran, JD, will discuss “Getting Everything You Can Out of Your IEP Meeting“.  She is a founding partner of The Child and Family Law Center of the North Shore.   Her practice is founded on the philosophy that children and their families often require a multidisciplinary approach to intervention.

Michelle Burr is offering “Parenting 101:  Back to Basics” for parents desiring optimal family functioning.  Recently she created “Survivor:  Parenthood” a company with a series of practical workshops to adress families needs in an effective and economic way.

Finally, Dr. Greg Brown will present “Chronic Lyme Disease and the Autism Spectrum Disorders”.   As research continues, it becomes clearer that chronic infection is a major player in autism spectrum disorders.  Dr. Brown will explore the issues around Lyme.  He is an Internist and Medical Director at the ARCH Medical Center in Franklin, Wisconsin.

Rivkin Law Offers Discounted Supplemental Needs Planning Session — Feb 2

The next information session for the Discounted Supplemental Needs Planning Program (DSNP) will take place Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 9:30-11:30am at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, 30 Riverwoods Rd, Lincolnshire.  This is an in-depth presentation that discusses estate planning for families with children with special needs. The program is free and limited to 12 families.  For more information click here.

The DSNP program  is offered by Rivkin & Rivkin (a law firm specializing in estate planning and special needs planning). will offer low-cost legal planning for a limited number of eligible families that qualify for the services.  The planning services can include special needs trusts, simple wills, and power of attorney documents.

To participate in DSNP, the families need to be Illinois residents, have relatively modest assets, have not yet done estate or supplemental needs planning, and believe that the actual cost of such legal services would be a significant burden to their family.   Each candidate family will need to attend an education session and, if they opt to participate, complete materials online.

“We know that there are many parents in the area who face the many challenges of raising a child with special needs.  One of those challenges is obtaining a simple, but high-quality, estate plan that provides for their family – including protecting public benefits eligibility for a child who currently, or might one day, qualify for such benefits.  Our firm is committed to improving the quality and affordability of this planning, and we are excited about the opportunity to assist some of these families through our DNSP program.”  -according to Denise Kaplan of Rivkin & Rivkin, LLC.
